Does online therapy work?

Like many diseases, addiction won’t get better on its own. It takes a support system, a medical team, and thorough, comprehensive care to get on the road to recovery. Part of effective addiction treatment includes therapy. Because underlying issues can fuel an addiction – issues like trauma, eating disorders, careers, and more – it’s important to address them. Otherwise, the addiction can become an endless cycle.

But treatment isn’t always within arm’s reach. Once someone has come to terms with accepting treatment, they may be faced with other barriers, such as lack of transportation, time constraints, and other hurdles.

Luckily, digital health was born to overcome these hurdles and provide better accessible care. Digital health brings treatment exactly where people need it: Wherever they are. Online therapy makes addiction treatment accessible, safe, and effective. As online therapy becomes increasingly popular, more research and studies have found it’s effective. In fact, a study published in the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment found that patients who received teletherapy treatment for opioid, alcohol, and nicotine use disorders reported high levels of satisfaction. The study also found upon follow-up that teletherapy treatment was effective for these patients.

Another study published by a group at Yale evaluated 137 people suffering from alcohol or drug addiction. The participants were split into three treatment groups: weekly group outpatient counseling, individual cognitive-behavioral therapy sessions, and a web-based program. The participants in the web-based program were less likely to drop out while showing higher success rates (with 67% no longer meeting diagnostic criteria for substance abuse, compared to 43-52% for individual and group counseling).

In other words, for some individuals, online therapy may be more effective than in-person addiction treatment and therapy.

Online therapy can be especially beneficial for those who:

  • Have transportation difficulties or want to avoid driving to and from their appointments.
  • Prefer easy, convenient scheduling.
  • Want to avoid seeing people they may know.
  • Prefer to share personal information from the comfort of their own homes.
  • Need flexibility with their schedule due to other responsibilities.

Online therapy takes the worry out of receiving treatment, as it’s available wherever you are and wherever you need it.
